Virginia Bird Allred, age 69, of Provo, died Monday, June 25, 1990, at her home of cancer.
She was born January 31, 1921 in Payson, Utah, a daughter of Freeman C. and Eva Marchbanks Bird. She married R. Chase Allred on June 25, 1947 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She received her early education in the Payson schools, then attended school in Springville, graduating from Springville High School. She received a BA Degree from BYU in 1957. She has lived in Manhattan, Kansas, where Mr. Allred received his master's degree; later moving to Lincoln, Nebraska, where Mr. Allred received his PhD. She has lived in Provo since 1955, during those years serving as president of BYU Women and on the Provo School Board. She spent five years in Bolivia, two years in government service and three years with her husband who served as mission president.
On their return she served on the Primary General Board; later they served a second mission to Hawaii at the Temple Visit Center. She was always active in music and choral groups, opera and also as a soloist. She loved homemaking, gardening and enjoyed her flowers. She was always active in all church activities and church choirs.
She is survived by her husband, Provo; two sons and five daughters, Rodney Allred, Steve Allred, Mrs. James D. (Leslie) Gibbons, all of Provo; Mrs. Louis J. (Linda) Othote, Marlborough, Mass.; Mrs. H. Lewis (Patrice) Swain, Farmington, Utah; Mrs. Steven (Karen) Culverwell, Kaliente, Nevada; Mrs. David A. (Jane) Larson, Salt Lake City; 23 grandchildren; one brother, three sisters, Robert Bird, Springville, Utah; Genevieve Whiting, Mapleton, Utah; Barbara Robertson, Provo, Utah; Mary Ann Bradford, Salt Lake City, Utah.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 29, 1990, at 11 a.m., at the Pleasant View 9th Ward LDS Chapel, 2445 No. 650 East, Provo. Friends may call at the Berg Mortuary in Provo, 185 E. Center Street, on Thursday evening, 6-8 p.m., or at the ward chapel on Friday, one hour prior to services. Interment at East Lawn Memorial Hills Cemetery in Provo. Family requests contributions be made to LDS Missionary Fund.
