Elder Skaggs and I became very close in the LTM. Although we never served in the same city we corresponded with one another throughout our missions. I still have a stack of letters from him in my prized possessions.
Jim and I ended up serving as bishops at the same time in a two ward building. Before that time, there had been some bad feelings between our ward leaders. That immediately came to an end as Bishop Skaggs and I worked together.
His sense of humor was amazing and endearing to all. Jim's specialty was his impressions, particularly of our leaders. He had an excellent President and Sister McAllister, a President Kimball and of course, as bishop, he could immitate the voice of our stake president.
I visited Jim in the hospital, knowing that his death was imminent. After I bid him a final farewell, I walked to the door. Jim called my name, I turned to him one last time and he said, "I'll see you on the other side." I am looking forward to that day.
Ralph Perez (Perez) (1978)
One of the best missionaries that I knew. He was a mentor to many of us.
Kent Merrell (1978)
I hope we can find a less abreviated life sketch for Elder Skaggs.
